The Greek salad is a recipe of the Greek gastronomic tradition, known and appreciated all over the world. Its Greek name is "salted horiatiki" and it is a tasty salad made up of red onion, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, Greek black olives, enriched with the classic and unmistakable Greek feta cheese and seasoned with oregano, salt, pepper and oil. extra virgin olive oil. The mix of these typically Mediterranean ingredients is very appetizing, fresh, light and highly digestible. For the success of this simple dish, the ingredients are very important: the vegetables must be very fresh and Greek olives of the kalamata type are preferable. In addition, the feta cheese must be original DOP, preferably sheep and goat cheese which has a much stronger flavor.

Some add other ingredients such as radishes, capers and lettuce. The oil-based dressing can be replaced by the tzatziki sauce, a typical Greek sauce with an intense flavor based on yogurt, garlic and cucumber.

The Greek salad is a dish to be enjoyed in summer as a single dish, but also very comfortable to be consumed for quick lunch in the office.

Feta cheese has a rather strong and savory flavor, so I recommend not to abound too much with salt. If you can't find it, you can replace it with seasoned ricotta.

The Greek salad recipe


The dosages of the ingredients listed below refer to 2 people:


  • 2 red and firm tomatoes
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 cucumbers
  • 200 g of feta cheese
  • 2 small green peppers
  • 12 kalamata olives
  • 1 spoon of oregano
  • 4 spoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt to taste
  • pepper as needed


Wash and dry the vegetables.

Cut the tomatoes into wedges. Peel the onion and cucumbers and cut them both into rings.

Remove the stem from the peppers and cut them into rings, removing seeds and filaments.

Dice the feta cheese and put it in a large bowl.

Add the vegetables and olives.

Finally season with extra virgin olive oil, freshly ground pepper, oregano and a little salt.

Mix thoroughly and bring the Greek salad to the table.
